What do you mean by Transmission?
A vehicle’s transmission is one of its most essential components. It is responsible for transferring power from the engine to the wheels.
In simple words, a car transmission, also known as the transmission system, is the mechanism that transfers power from the engine to the driving wheels. This vehicle component is crucial in determining the power and functionality of your engine systems. Automatic Transmission and Manual Transmission are the two types of transmissions.
Different types of Transmission
A vehicle’s transmission system can be classified into the following:
The original type of transmission is manual transmission. It is also known as the standard transmission, but chances are you have heard the term stick shift. The driver of this transmission uses a clutch to control torque transfer from the engine to the transmission, manually shifting between gears as needed.
Also, manual transmissions are the simplest type of transmission mechanically and often last longer than other types. There is less that can go wrong. The manual transmission’s only major disadvantage is the learning curve; these vehicles require more concentration and maneuvering than other transmissions.
A manual transmission requires the driver to select the appropriate gear and engage or disengage the clutch. To engage and disengage the engine from the transmission, the transmission employs a flywheel, pressure plate, and grip. The clutch is splined to the transmission input shaft and is sandwiched between them. Pushing in the clutch means releasing the pressure plate, which disconnects the grip from the engine.
An automatic transmission is a type of transmission or gearbox that can change gears automatically while the vehicle is in motion. Manufacturers also refer to it as auto, AT, or the self-shifting transmission. It is also referred to as an ‘n-speed’ automatic, where ‘n’ represents the number of forward gear ratios. It is a vehicle transmission type that eliminates drivers’ need to shift gears manually or independently.
CVT Transmission (Continuous Variable Transmission)
CVT’s, continuously variable transmissions, are pulley-based transmissions commonly found in small vehicles with small engines. For many years, CVT’s have been used in snow machines, ATV’s, and side-by-sides. They have also recently become popular in hybrid cars.
A small primary drive and a secondary sizeable driven clutch are used, with a belt or chain connecting the two. At a stop, the belt or chain will be low in the primary drive and high in the secondary purpose.
As you speed up, the primary drives contract, causing the belt or chain to walk up, while the secondary expands, causing the belt or chain to step down.
The term transmission refers to the gearbox, which uses gear and gear trains to convert speed and torque from a rotating power source (engine) to another device (wheels). Transmission fluid is used to lubricate the transmission components for optimized performance.
Indicators that your Transmission system needs repair services
Here are some of the top reasons that indicate your vehicle’s transmission system needs repair:
Refusal to Switch Gears
If your vehicle refuses or struggles to change gears, you are most likely dealing with a transmission problem. Low or erroneous transmission fluid types could cause your vehicle’s refusal to shift gears.
If you notice any burning odors coming from your vehicle, you should take them to a mechanic immediately.
